cutting fabric: HERE is what I have heard: you can cut fabric with your cricut.
BUT I HAVE ALSO HEARD: it dulls your needle/knife/cutting contraption thingy.
I would imgine that you would want a new cutter and a new mat to try it.
but I DO NOT KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE. I am in desperate need of a new cutter but everytime I go into joanns to buy one I come out with 3 bags of fabric and no cutter.
IF ANYONE HAS CUT FABRIC LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKED FOR YOU
i've googled it and the opinions are ALL over the place so I would love a first hand point of view!
keisha said,
"I saw that somebody asked about fabric - I have cut fabric & it's a little tricky. I ironed wonder under to the fabric first, then cut the design out (a 3 for DD's bday shirt). I set the blade deep &; cut speed slow. It did a pretty good job, but I still had to use scissors to finish cutting it out. I think with a little more practice I'd be golden :-)
cutting vinyl: this is something I DO KNOW! I love vinyl and a cricut. together it is just pure happiness.
now. before we watch the video
A. I don't sound like that. and i know everyone says that when on tape...but the computer kinda distorted my voice...especially when I was using the cricut... and it's hard to hear..but all the important parts are there so you aren't missing much (just basically me calling myself an idiot for not being able to peel the transfer tape off.)
B. sorry about the daughter interruption. she WAS napping..and the other kid was bribed like crazy to stay in his room. but crap happens. and this was my 4th take so I wasn't redoing it cause of her!
C. when I say contact paper I mean transfer tape
D. I really use my hands like that.
another thing I forgot to mention is that if you get those little bubbles in your vinyl..you can just take a little pin and pop them.
I know last post I mention I use provo craft vinyl...BUT NOW a huge thank you to miss sassy crafter who turned me onto this:
I spent 20 dollars and got all this:
there are a few sheets hiding too..
they have a ton of colors
they even did a
you can go here to see her pros and cons
and they keep you up to date on cricut news..
such as:
As you may have heard Provo Craft has sued the makers of Make the Cut and Sure Cuts A Lot. Sadly they have already reached a settlement with Make the Cut and new versions will no longer work with the Cricut. If you have an old version just don't update it and it should continue to work as long as your Cricut does.
Provo Craft and SCAL are still in court. Which means if you have ever considered purchasing SCAL now is the time to do it. If they do have to stop letting SCAL be compatible with the Cricut buying now should ensure you a usable copy. This too should continue to work as long as your Cricut.so you might want to get on that!
if you order from them..you might want to subscribe by email.. I get awesome deals from them all the time (like 20% off all square vinyl!)
I came across this little thing...that I want...
this cool little thing is called the jukebox...holds up to 6 cartridges so you don't have to keep shuffleing them in and out...
Here are some cute projects done by where is waldie?
and I'm loving this sock monkey (b is for boy cartridge)
and this one
she has got a ton of cute cricut stuff over there!
and just so you don't feel like the last cricut girl in a silhouette world...
here are some other people who are OBSESSED with their cricuts!
THIS place is AWESOME...if you are looking for a specific thing you can type it in and it will tell you what cartridge has it....so useful!
and remember..if you have a cricut and made cool things..send me a pic or link....OR if you have any questions ..ask away!
i have a silhouette and i'm a beginner...that's my disclaimer! :)
ReplyDeletei bought my silhouette for the purpose of cutting fabric. it took a little trial and error, but it works well for me. i haven't used it long enough to know how long a blade will last. and i've never cut vinyl (gasp!) with it, so i don't have that to compare.
just fuse wonder under on your fabric, peel the paper backing off, position on your cutting mat, cut (silhouette settings: 27 thickness, 3 speed (slow), pink blade). i also set it for double cut. works really well for me.
i should write a blog post about this, huh? :)

If you want to make your mat sticky again check out this tutorial http://thediyclub.com/2011/02/my-cricut-mat-was-not-sticky-anymore-solution-by-cheri-krylon/.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I hate to buy transfer tape and have found that painters tape works fabulously and is a TON cheaper! :)
I have a Cricut and I LOVE to see other bloggers that have one too! I feel like the only blogger in the world that doesn't have a Silhouette! LOL! I just made some Hoppy Easter blocks using my Cricut. I actually use mine ALL the time- I LOVE it! :)
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to my easter blocks :)

i have used my cricut to cut fabric a few times. i use heat n bond under it and it is quite easy to do but yes i think it does blunt your needle a little and sometimes you do need to use scissors but overall it cuts some fab intricate details that scissors can't. i must try vinyl..... tina x x http://scratchycatcrafter.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI am buying my sister-in-laws cricut off of her because she got the bigger one. I should get it in 2 weeks! I am sooo excited! I use my mom's all the time. We haven't tried to do vinyl or fabric yet but I want to do both!
ReplyDeleteA few things:
ReplyDelete1. I LOOOOVE my Cricut, but Cricuts have totally been outshined by Silhouettes lately on all of the blogs I follow, so I love that you are bringing us some Cricut love!
2. I have cut fabric before and it worked like a charm!!! I ironed on heat and bond to the fabric before I cut. Heat and Bond works better than wonder under because it's more plasticy, so less likely to shred your fabric. Here are the settings for your machine: (expression machine) Put the blade on 5, the speed on the lowest and the pressure to max. This will ensure that you will not go too fast and pull your fabric. Make sure your fabric is stuck really good to the mat. I suggest using a NEW BLADE if possible. In fact, I have a "fabric" blade that I use only when I cut fabrics out.
3. I always forget what settings to use for different things like fabric, vinyl, paper, etc. So I used a chart from here:
http://www.obsessedwithscrapbooking.com/2009/05/cricut-settings-table.html
4. I know you live in idaho, but there is a place in Salt Lake called Regional Supply, and that's where I get all my vinyl. If you buy a lot of it, you can 24 inch wide (rolls, not sheets) for about a dollar a foot.
Wow, long post. Hope this helps. I made a happy birthday pennant banner with my cricut (out of fabric) and LOOVE it! I'll share it on my blog after Easter.

I have one of those Jukeboxes. TOTALLY worth it. I got it from that same e-bay shop i sent you an e-mail about... craft-e-corner.
ReplyDeleteThanks for featuring my Cricut projects!

I, too, have used heat n' bond to cut fabric on my cricut. I think I used the deep blade housing rather than the regular one because I was also cutting felt. (The felt only works with simpler shapes.) If you're planning on actually appliqueing the pieces to something, it's great. Otherwise, the fabric is all plastic-y for no apparent reason...
ReplyDeleteOh...and I also have a link for you. Last summer, I worked for Provo Craft as part of a group of artists/art teachers. They gave us each a cricut and some cartridges in exchange for some step-by-step projects and our feedback on the machine. (They wanted some non-scrapbooker perspectives/project ideas.) I posted a few of the projects I did on my blog. http://www.stayathomeartist.com/2010/07/cricut-projects.html
ReplyDeleteIf you want more info, let me know!
My question is your cutting mat....you said yours was old and dirty. What if your mat is fairly new, would you still gluestick the vinyl on or can you cut without using a glue stick.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this video. I have had my cricut for a while and even bought vinyl, transfer paper and was unsure how to do this. Thank you, thank you!

I cut fabric with my Cricut frequently. I actually iron on freezer paper to both sides of the fabric to help it stick to the mat and to cut more smoothly. I do use a deep cut blade and only use that one for fabric. It works great. I love that you are sharing some Cricut love for those of us who have and LOVE our Cricuts!
ReplyDeletei tried to cut fab and it didnt stick well to the mat and kinda just yanked it all over the place. i dont want to dull my blade so I havent tried again. I have the MTC too and i havent been able to import images in the program like before, text works but the images for some reason dont. AND and top of that I cant open jpgs on my computer anymore!
ReplyDeleteI had a Cricut, loved it! Bought a Silhouette, hated it and sold it on ebay after a few months. Cricut's for me.. I don't prefer to carry my computer with me everywhere I go just because I want to cut something. I hate that about the Silhouette!
ReplyDeleteI didn't read all the comments so I might be repeating someone, I have circut expressions and have recently read that there is a deep blade for thicker materials, thanks so much for sharing i look farward to useing my cricut more often.
ReplyDeleteso cute !! I love it

O.k..... so I'm a 'blog' stalker, but not the bad kind (I'm hoping I'm the good kind). Any who... I still don't know the what a 'circut' is or how it cuts vinyl (which to me sounds like like you would pronounce it like a 'vie-nal' record) or even what a 'silhouette' is. I see this stuff all over the place on the 'blogs' that I stalk regularly for kid craft ideas, but never know what to do with said stuff or where to get it. And do I really need one... it seems like a cool product, I just don't know anyone WITH one. And aren't they kinda expensive? I was just wondering if anyone would have a comment about it... thanks.
ReplyDeletefirst..I only use my glue stick on my mat if it's lost alll it's stick. if it's still holding your paper in place...skip the glue. second. silhouettes and cricuts cut out paper, fabric and vinyl...better than you could by hand. intricate stuff. silhouettes are for your computer to download stuff to cut..cricut you don't need a computer (I didn't have one when I bought mine) I just saw a cricut on sale for about 80 at a spring sale at Joanns. so you can get them for pretty cheap if you watch the sales!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great You Tube video about cutting fabric with your cricut:

I've done exactly what she says it it turned out great!
Thanks Kim for your vinyl tutorial. I tried it and yay!!! I did it. My mixer is named Cheeto(he is orange and looks like a cheeto according to my step daughter) so thats what we call him. Thanks again!!!

I LOVE your blog! So fun!! I used fabric to personalize a onesie http://glendie.blogspot.com/2011/02/hello-litty-font-onesie.html and also to make some pretty lettering for big banners for my church: http://glendie.blogspot.com/2010/04/easter-banner.html.

I love your blog!!! I have a juke box for the cricut that I bought off e-bay and I never use it...seriously I think I used it like 2 times and than I got a gyspy for my birthday since it was black friday and my birthday is like 1 week later...gotta love my hubby. I'd be willing to sell it to you for a good price just to get it out of my craft closet. Email me @ royal_catcher@yahoo.com if your interested.

A little trick I just read for cutting fabric on the Cricut is to use the "multicut" function if your machine has it. (Expression has one, I know for sure) The machine will cut out your image then go back & recut it over again (kinda like re-tracing it) to get a cleaner cut. Keep a close eye on it though to make sure its going precisely on the first image. Sometimes my fabric wiggles a little & I have to stop it mid-cutting.
ReplyDeleteThis little tip has really helped in cutting my fabric out! Have fun crafting!
I used material on my Cricut and it worked out great. I make wall hangings, quilts and cloths and I use my Cricut quite often. Been using mine for more than a year and haven't had to replace the cutter blade yet. Thanks for the tutorials.
