a quilt..for boys...

i don't know where this idea came from...probably when i was in my bed. cause  that is the only time it's quiet enough for me to think.
but i got super excited for it.

i wanted a quilt...
that you could cuddle in and be all warm and cozy when you are a babe...

.and then when you get a little older and cuddlin ain't for you (i hate when my babes get to this point of being too cool to cuddle)...you could use your blanket as a car mat...

soon as i had this idea....I immediately went out and bought the fabric for it....cause i do that...(seriously. i could craft for about a year and half and would never have to buy supplies.)
then it sat there while i tried to work out the details in my head......
i drew sketches....(real official like)
(the fabric for the back was 36 by 44...so i made 12 quilt pieces...3 across..4 down.
12 inches by 11 inches (with a quarter inch for seam allowances..)

and sat down and laid it out...
i sat with these three pieces for about 25 min...
and decided i wanted to make it look a lot more piecey looking...
and then i just started hacking and cutting.
i cut all the brown road pieces 3 inches....to make it all even. and i worked my way down....i'm not a super measurer precise person. so i just eyeballed it and sewed as i went to make sure it was "close enough" kinda my sewing motto...yeah..it's close enough.
i made 12 squares. i thought it would was easier to break it down to squares so you aren't super overwhelmed.
here's the order how i sewed the pieces...
it makes it so you just have to make nice straight lines. after i had all 12 squares i sewed them to finally get my quilt together..
then i added some car patches...
from this fabric:

and stitched a couple houses around for fun...

then i sewed all along the road to make the look of the lines of the road.
added my cute car backing (that i got HERE)

and binded it with orange flannel.
so fun. i had a moment of crap this is going to be ugllllly.
but i actually really like how it turned out!!!

  7. This is great! I'm all about useful beyond babyness. I recently made a nephew a quilt with hidden animals and things hidden in a jungle. It kept my five year old busy even half made.
And I am so with you on close enough. Quilting should be fun not stressful.
