so. we rent.
and my cheapness has a real hard time buying things for something that is not mine.
but i am stinking tired of looking at this:
and i had a basic idea. It involved buying a drum shade (at the thrift store) cut up the back and placing it over.. (after I decorated it)
but wouldn't you know....i couldn't find a drum shade that would fit.
dumb drum.
dumb thrift store.
and i sat with the thought brewing in my head for a good 3 months.
then one day when I was cutting some metal for my menu board kits....
the metal was laying on my floor.
and the lightbulb dinged.
(100 watt)
I can just make my own dumbdrum. (say that five times fast)
so i measured it....
and tin snippped it...
and placed that baby right on (it sits on the lip of the existing shade)
now...i have to say...if i was going for the modern look....i would leave it. cause i kinda liked it....
but instead... i made my own printed fabric (you can see it HERE)
and just hot glued it right around the edges....
(start with the middle...and work your way out)it's totally removable....and i can swap out whatever fabric i want as my mind redecorates.
hindsight:
now. i probably would have used posterboard -- it would have made the light shown through a little more. not quite has heavy duty...but you live and learn!
Adorable. I love this idea. It is always hard to dress up a place you rent because there are only so many changes you can make. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHow cool! I am trying to figure out how to recover a lamp for my daughter's room. Thanks for the inspiration!

OMG! Would you believe I picked this exact light fixture in white for above our kitchen table 18 years ago (the memory of picking ALL the lighting for our house one Saturday after a Friday night of too much revelry STILL haunts me) About 5 years ago I did a rust treatment and have been living with it. I have been looking for a replacement....but as usual you have SAVED ME! I will try it with posterboard and let you know! You always have the best ideas...thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Great Job! I will be pinning this right now :)
ReplyDeleteI have that EXACT fixture!! Thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteholy crap! you are a genius.
ReplyDeleteI think the only thing that would have made this better is if you painted the hardwear from gold to something else. Bronze or pewter would look nice ;)
ReplyDeleteSuch a creative (and downright adorable) solution!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the houndstooth, too.
That looks great and I love that you can change it so easily!
ReplyDeleteokay, i want this in black and cream over my kitchen table... such a good idea. You little crafty mind!
ReplyDeleteThis is the second thing I've checked out from your blog tonight--I must follow you now. :)

Wonderful idea! I love houndstooth and the bright red and white would make any space extra cheery. Good job! www.inbetweenlaundry.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteholy fabulousness! LOVE IT. Such a creative idea!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have you stop by my blog and become a follower! :)
This is such a fabulous idea!
ReplyDeletevery cool!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!
ReplyDeleteAnd your dumbdrum comment makes me think of that big Easter Island statue in the Night at the Museum movies. "Dumdum bring gumgum?"
I love this hounds tooth!! I love how big the print is
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! It turned out great!
ReplyDeleteStopping over from TT&J linky party. Very creative and resourceful idea... love it!
ReplyDeleteLove!! What a great way to change it up without actually changing the light. Love the houndstooth pattern!
ReplyDeleteI like this idea a lot. I hated when we rented cuz the lights always sucked. And I wouldn't have done the posterboard, I like the tin metal. The light would have came through but you could see where the fabric was folded over and everything. Plus I inhereted my moms worry-wortness and posterboard to that heat would make me nervous. So I love it the way it is!
ReplyDeleteI am so in love with this light and the idea! I have a horrible kitchen fan that I want to be rid of but just can't decide what to replace it with...thanks for the inspiration to get something done - haha! It looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteI seriously Love it! I can't weit to make one!
ReplyDeleteGenius! I haven't been able to find any dum drum shades at our thrift either!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a good idea. We rent, too. It can be so hard to make it your own.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I love the fabric that you used, too!
ReplyDeleteClever girl! What a difference! it made me get up and go study my over-the-nook-fixture. Nah, I'm not much of a drum shade person. But I would like a different fixture. And I don't rent. But I got no $$ right now. Maybe some of that chalk paint...
ReplyDelete100 times better!!!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great, I love it! I am trying to figure out how to make a drum shade for my dining room.
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower
Great idea! And great way of getting around the renting issue

Thanks again!

That's really a wonderful idea. I'm thinking of making something like that someday soon. I probably should make a stencil so that the light will shine through with a design.
