I'm biting the bullet

and i'm going to do it.

and since I am putting it in writing on this ole here blog...I will actually have someone to answer to if I decide to shove it in a box and claim I never started.

what?
do you know what I'm talking about?

crocheting.

yup. that's right.

(and for the record could someone please explain the difference between crocheting, knitting and tatting.?)

it all started when my sister showed up for christmas wearing this:

too cute right.
You can buy one HERE (and for a GREAT price!)

well I want one

and while looking around I saw these from paddi cakes

and I KNEW  I had to learn!

and I have always said that I don't need anymore hobbies...like crocheting. but I can do this in the car right?

you can't hot glue in the car (well, you could...but that would be dangerous) and when I say in the car I don't mean while driving

** (a girl and a glue gun does not condone using crocheting needles and yarn while operating machinery)**

The dainty daisy HAD a stitch along to make this:
(now for the record...she started this in dec and finished in jan....so it's over...but instructions are instructions right?)

step by step

omigosh I loved this show.

but I mean like videos and pictures...

step by step...or more like baby step by baby step.

so I am doin it....

and then maybe I will be able to crochet one of these adorable dolls

this one reminds me of this dude..
you cand find these great patterns
here

so join me and let's learn something new...

and hopefully not fail miserably...

  1. I crochet and the advice I give to beginners is do not give up. For your first project I usually recommended a potholder or dishrag that is straight not to big and easy so you can get your tension (how tight your stitch is) right. but don't give up because your frustrated it will come with practice.

  2. Crocheting is on my list too. I knit (which is so much harder than I thought it'd be! also, I am not awesome at it), but crocheting seems to get projects done much sooner (and I am an instant gratification kind of girl). Can't wait to see how it's going!

  4. I love crocheting!! I can't knit to save my life, I tried it many times but I always find holes in my knits, so I tried a knitting machine.. it should be easy right?? nope, hole and more holes. I took the machine back and sticking to crocheting. Crocheting is easy once you figure out the basics! Good luck!

  6. One of the biggest differences is obviously the needles, but it's the techniques that you use. If you try crochetpatterncentral.com they have a lot of great tutorials and explanations!

I LOVE to crochet and started when I was 7 althought I still feel like a beginner. The hardest thing to crochet is learning how to hold the yarn. Once you find a way you are comfortable with your golden!!!

I can crochet in the car but I do have some friends that it makes them car sick for some reason? Can't wait to see what you make!

  7. I've been wanting to learn for a while now. Knitting, chrocheting- all of it, whatever. It's ALL so fab. But- I don't need another hobby or time sucker (as Breadwinner calls them) so I'll stick to reading about you learning. (insert super sad face) Good LUCK! PS When you said step by step, I totally thought new kids on the block. Step by step- ooo babay- gonna get to ya girrrllll.

  9. I just taught myself to crochet. I've been knitting for 4 years.

First, knitting=two pointed needles, crocheting=one claeed hook.

    Go here: www.youtube.com\user\bethintx1

She starts really simple: holding your hook and yarn; perfect for beginners!

I learned...maybe two weeks ago and I've made three hats and two shamrocks. :)

  12. Crocheting really is easy, you can totally do it! I'm not great at it, but I think I just haven't practiced enough. There are so many cute projects you can make with crochet so I think it's a GREAT new hobby to pick up :) Prudent Baby has a couple of really cute, easy patterns that I've followed.

  16. Gosh Kim, It's about time... I'm glad you got with the times and picked up that crochet hook. Now you too can call yourself a mad hooker. Which by the way, our ward started a crochet club, called...wait for it....The Hooker's Habit. Awesome.... It's too bad the Relief Society Pres. will probably ax that name in like, 5 seconds.

Can't wait to see your awesome creations.

  17. Oh, and tatting? No one knows... Someone tatted me these two intricate hearts for my wedding. When people come over, I sometimes pretend I made them... until someone exclaims "You know tatting??!" and then I follow with an awkward pause and a quick change of subject.

  18. I just began crocheting and when you start ... DO NOT GIVE UP! Being my make-everything-harder-then-it-needs-to-be self, I chose a blanket pattern that has two different colors that you join together with a zigzagging row and ... well I started it in early January and I'm half way through because I've had to fix something major on each row at least once! lol! But keep at it and have fun with it!

  19. This just makes me so happy!!! I am teaching myself to knit. (Via YouTube videos) and a lot of practice and patience.

My whole family (the ladies of course) crochet so well and I've tried about 8 times and each time I throw it--really I do. I'm not a crochet-kind of kid. I love the things they create but I'm just not skilled. So as a 'last ditch' effort, I am trying knitting--which isn't going as well as I want....I'm an instant gratification kind of kid myself...and so I will try a little longer before I throw this too!!!

I wish you well in this new fun endeavor. I think you are super talented, so this would be so cool for you! :) I can't wait to see your creations!

  20. I love to crochet. I mostly do square or rectangular things but I like them because they are mindless. When you get to the end you turn around and go back.
I haven't really tried any patterns where I would actually have to count stitches. If I want to count then I do my cross-stitch. LOL
But I would love to knit. And I agree on the Youtube vids for help when you need it.

  21. I do all three - tatting, crochet, knitting - just starting the knitting. Crochet is wonderful, so fun - you can take it all kinds of directions. And you can drop the needle or take it out or stop, then restart easily. Tatting? so pretty. and you look elegant & sexy doing it, the hand motion is lovely. but not as useful as the other two unless you REALLY like lace edgings. Also I thought it was hard to learn because I didn't know anyone personally who did it.
My advice for you - if it feels weird to hold the needles like pencils, try the "knife hold" - inside your hand like a table knife.
I also knit "continental" style, holding my yarn on my left hand - that's the same way you hold it for crochet & tatting so it's consistent. And continental goes faster when you are still learning.

  22. I totally decided to learn how to this past winter and have made 2 scarfs and am working on my first blanket. I used youtube and searched for crocheting for beginners. The hardest parts has been tention and don't use plastic hooks (they don't work for me at least).

    Enjoy and have fun!

  25. Crochetting is great for waiting times - gymnastics calss, piano lesson, dentist's office, and can result in some fun conversations. My advice for when you are out crochetting - have a simple pattern for a scarf or something that just goes back and forth, one or two different stitches - otherwise, you can lose your way when your daughter gets her back handspring.
