Cricut love

I love my cricut.

(I know I know...with all these silhouette giveaways you have forgotten about the little ole cricut)

well, I still love mine.

I bought it when it NEVER went on sale and NO one had one and I thought I was pretty freakin awesome. (well, I still think I'm pretty freakin awesome....)

I love my cricut. ( and no..i'm not getting paid in any stinking way for saying this....I just love it okay but a girl and her cricut just didn't sound as good as a girl and a glue gun.) it's all about alliteration.

and I want you all to love yours too (if you have one)

so, I'm doing some basic cricut instructions--cause when I first bought it..I was a little overwhelmed. Which brings me to...

I'm also going to be doing posts about each cricut cartridge I have...cause you know when you get in there (preferably joanns) you are standing in front of a RACK of cute things....it's SUPER HARD to pick which one you want!

Now, I just have the basic cricut. the mats are the 12x6. I sat in the store staring at this one and the expressions one (that is 12x12 mats) and I just didn't think I needed  the bigger one. (and honestly I really haven't needed it so far knock on wood!) but the 12x6 only cuts up to one inch to 5 1/2 so if you are going to need something bigger....keep that in mind!
I think this is called the Baby cricut

They also have the Cricut Create

It's a little bit more fancy...it can cut smaller than 1 inch and the blade is directional (whatever that means)

and the cricut expression
this is the martha stewart of cricuts.....
it does 12x12 but there is a 12x 24 mat you can buy....so that is some mammoth cutting. I'm sure it does a bunch of other fancy stuff...but seriously so far I have never wanted anything extra than what i have with my "bug"

(there is also the cricut cake:

which I want so bad cause it looks sooo fun (then I have a flashback of how bad I wanted the choc factory and how I would make all these choc confections and since I have gotten it (7 years ago) it has sat in the shelf above my fridge right next to the waffle maker I never use and the electric knife we use once a year)
but it cuts through edible paper sheets and if you are a mad cake decorator you should invest! it looks so fun!

when buying a cartridge: SHOP THE SALES!  I have only bought one cartridge full price--(80 bucks!) most are $25-35 Joanns has sales for all the big holidays (like BLACK FRIDAY!) (just make sure you pick out a few you want before hand cause if you go in there for a certain one...chances are it will be sold out!)  My cousin said that michaels and roberts have great sales like 4 for 25$...so keep your eyes open for that (sadly, joann's 40% off coupon excludes cricut cartriages (boo!)

My local scrapbook store rents cricut cartridges for $5 a day...which is great for those themed ones (like disney)

or seasonal..

Now..when looking at cartridges.....
looking on the back you just see the basics
but you need to pay attention the creative features along the side:

This shows what you can do besides just the basics...

see...this one does cursive...block letters...the one in the oval...and the one in the trapezoid...lowercase and uppercase!

The non-alphabet ones have a LOT of choices! This is the paper doll one and it does the outfits...the accesories (the club)...a hairpiece...and some background stuff (dinosaurs and palm trees.) They all have so many choices.

MATS: you will need to keep replacing your mats...which is the part I hate the most about cricut! I extend the life of my mats by using a glue stick to adhere the paper (as long as the paper isn't too thin)  glue works great for this. (don't tell cricut!)

imperfectly beautiful recommends zig glue:

she also has SCAL(sure cuts alot)  and if you don't know what that is......hear it from her own words:
" I pride myself in saying I've only purchased ONE cricut cartridge on ebay for 20 bucks! Never again...no more cartridges for me. For those of you, who don't know what SCAL is.....it's a software that allows you to hook your cricut up to your computer, use all of your true type fonts and dingbats, and design you own customized look! It is absolutely fantastic and well worth the $75....the price of one cricut cartridge)!!!"

and she gives a how to HERE (i might just have to buy one!!!!)

AND the cricut has that high tech thing that stores all you cartridges and you can stretch them and resize them and turn them and all sorts of fancy pancy stuff!)  It's called the gypsy.
check out the how-to video HERE it will make you want one! it's more expensive than the scal software.... but it looks so much fun to use!

Now..my cricut didn't come with a spatula...
and I think this is one thing that you NEED. It's pretty handy if you ask me!!!

Now if you want some basic BASIC instructions....(like how to load your matt and what the H all the little buttons on the side do you should head on over to this blog:

she knows her cricut crap.

she has this awesome cutting guide that tells you how fast to go....how to adjust your blade and the pressure! it's a must! you can print it off and just keep it with your cricut stuff!
go HERE

another great cricut blog is

cricutholiday

some of their cute stuff:

they also have great videos for the basics....and also shows you the 411 on the gypsy!

so....maybe you don't have a cricut..I still LOVE their vinyl! I use it a ton and not always with my cricut!

Remember this project?
(It's still holding up except the cord has a rip cause of my husband scraped it when scraping the snow off!)

It comes in lots of colors!

I know you can buy vinyl everywhere..but this is still my fav. It's at Joanns (and i'm always there anyways) and you can use your coupon with it!
all right...that's all I got...
stay tuned to see some cricut projects and cartridges....
and if you have a cricut and a fav cartridge...let me know!
AND if you have any "cricut" projects send me a link! I will show them off!

like this one:

"To make the boy bags I used the doodle charms cartridge for the bear, baby face, duck and bottle. For the "Boy" I used the Celebrations cartridge and for the bag I used the Plantin Schoolbook cartridge."

stick it to the silhouette and have some cricut pride!

  4. Oh, I love this post because I was beginning to feel like I was the last Cricut owner left. I only just recently ventured into vinyl, and I LOVE it! I have two friends who have SCAL, and I know I should get it too. I also know a gal with a Gypsy and it is AWESOME because you can manipulate the space on your mat and connect the letters together (my favorite feature). A great online store for cartridges on the cheap is HallmarkScrapbook. I have purchased cartridges (Hello Kitty and Mickey) for as low as $9. Okay, I could say about a gagillion things more, but I will spare you my babble.

  5. I adore my CriCut... my husband keeps asking if I want the larger one but I don't! My latest project included cutting letters out to adhere to the doors leading into my craft room "CREATE" and our bedroom "DREAM" and our basement "PLAY"

  6. Okay, we need a tutorial on how to do vinyl projects with the basic Cricut machine. I didn't even know you could! LOOOOVE!

  7. ohh i needed this i have a cricut that i don't ever use. My husband made me mad a few years ago so I hopped onto Ebay - bought the cricut, the gypsy and about 20 cartridges (warning Ebay is addicting....don't reccomend it while angry shopping because I had to hide the cartridges around the house....And I found one the other week hidden in the trunk!) Here is my question: I've never used th gypsy (um it didn't come with instructions!?!?) that takes the place of the SCAL software? Really ? I may have to get it out!!

  10. Thank you so much for all the info, Im trying to figure out weather I will buy a Cricut or a Sihlouette and one of the big things was being able to download/create your own designs, the hubs a photographer/web artist/web designer/photoshop guru, so I know I will want something I can create designs on.

  11. What about using it to cut fabric? Ever done that? I intend to but frankly, I am scared. I need tips.

  12. Yeah cricut! There are some great tips - I only started to use it in February so I have lots to learn still. I have the baby cricut (hope to upgrade soon...but someoen gave it to me, so I am a happy girl and I am learning stuff on it). I won the SCAL software and a super cute cartridge..so I am a happy girl. We all need to band together and cricut away.

  13. I am so glad to see this post! Like another poster said, I was starting to feel like the last Cricut owner on earth...and I have the original one as well. Sometimes I wish I had picked up the Expression but I am still very content with my Cricut. Looking forward to yours posts :)

  15. I'm glad to see some Cricut love especially for the basic Cricut- the one I have. Its just the right size for me, since I dont have a designated craft room or table and I have to use it and put it away.

I'm not a scrapbooker, I bought mine to make cards, signs, and to cut stencils & iron-on vinyl for clothing designs. I just bought some regular sticky-backed vinyl, not sure what I will do with it-but I'm a sucker for a sale LOL

I get my iron-on vinyl from Expressions Vinyl (website). I came across that website from a few of the blogs that I follow. They sell it in various sizes including the 12x6 size.

  18. I am so excited you are posting this! I got my Cricut Expressions for Christmas this past year (along with the SCAL software) after much research between Cricut and Silhoeutte. Honestly, if you have SCAL, you don't need anything else. I use a google image search for the pictures I want to use, and you can even "Weld" letters together using Scal. You can also use any font you can download off the internet. LOVE my Cricutand Scal, but haven't used it to the best of it's abilities.
Looking forward to your posts on it!

  23. I'm so pleased you've done this post! I've got a 'Baby Bug' and haven't used it for ages, been a bit intimidated by all the fab Silhouette crafts out there forgetting that the Cricut does the same thing, duh to me!

  24. Thank you so so much for posting this & future cricut posts to come... I bought a cricut just a couple weeks ago and am planning on using it soon to make my own decorations for my sons Mickey mouse party! I will definitely share my project with you as soon as I am done! (: can't wait to read more tutorials from you about the cricut!

  26. Please share about using the baby bug for vinyl. I have one (love it) but have only used it with cardstock for scrap booking. I would love to do vinyl.

  27. Just a headsup, I have a silhouette but I saw numerous Cricuts on SALE at WalMart for very big discounts just last week on the clearance aisle. If anyone is looking for a discounted one. Geaux check them out!!

  28. I get my cartridges from Amazon now, they are typically less than the sales at Michael's, AC Moore, or JoAnn's which are the three big craft stores around me. Also, since most of them are over $25, you get free shipping :) if you can wait, this will save you a ton of money!

I just ordered my first set of vinyl from Amazon to play around with. Should be here tomorrow :)

Also have the SCAL, I love it! I am a graphic designer so sometimes I just want to cut out something that isn't available on a cartridge so I just make it up.

  29. I LOVE that you did a post on the cricut. With all the Silhouette talk in the blog world I was starting to have some envy, but thanks for reminding us how cool our cricuts are. Can't wait to see what you post!

  30. I came upon my 'baby' Cricut by means of my best friend- her husband upgraded her to the big one and she gave me the smaller. I've used it more for vinyl than anything else- I have the depth and speed on 2- and those sheets of vinyl- just cut them into 6 by 12 inch sheets to fit your mat for your machine. I have done SO many projects with the vinyl. I only have a couple of cartridges (that others gave me..). A friend from church just got a small Cricut on Craigslist and then invested in the SCAL software- it is SOOOOO cool, I want it bad! The cost alone is worth one full price cartridge, and you have practically infinite possibilities- she said you can also download fonts from elsewhere and plunk them into your SCAL program... and the welding.. and and and... yeah, the vinyl is fun- and fabulous that you can use you JoAnns coupon with it :)

  31. i love my cricut, too!

i have the sure cuts a lot software and have never ever purchased a cartridge, just use the one it came with!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I started out with the baby cricut, way back when, lol. Now I have the expression, and I use Sure Cuts a Lot. I <3 it! I really don't purchase cartridges anymore, I think the software is totally worth it.

Not only can you weld the letters & shapes together, you can cut out any font you have on your computer! There are thousands of fonts out there that are free, and the dingbat fonts are awesome for cutting. Also, you can find lots of disney & other character fonts for free, which saves a LOT of money.

  33. i love sure cuts a lot!!! like you said i dont use any other cartridges anymore!! it rocks

  34. You don't need to buy the cricut cake. All you need is a deep cut blade on a normal cricut and it will cut the fondant like you want.

  35. Oh my goodness! Thanks for putting another one of my projects on here! I LOVE my Cricut expression! My husband surprised me with it one year for my birthday and it is just so fun! I was just saying to my friend the other day "It seems like all the craft blogs only talk about silhouette machines, what happened to all the Cricuts?!" So it was great to see this post! Man I love your blog!!

  41. Thank you so much for posting this! I have been left out because all the blogs I subscribe to use the Silhouette, and I haven't been able to find any that still use cricut. :( I have SCAL and haven't even tried to use it with my cricut because I've been to scared! :S Do you have any recommendations for where to buy vinyl? I think I want to start using mine more!

    Thanks!

But I love the blogs that post about their cricut experience it deff helps a newbie like me! I agree about all this Silhouette buzz & it makes you feel like your missing out but in fact the Cricut is just as awesome! &I think its cool to post & not be paid for it & stuff go you! 45. SCAL(sure cuts a lot) Is a must have. Their boards have tons of things you can cut for free. I only have 2 cartridges and have SCAL. Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thank you SO much for this post!!! I got a Cricut Expression several months ago & use it quite a bit for craft projects! I'm wanting the SCAL software, but wasn't sure if it was compatible with MACs. Anyone use their SCAL on a Mac?

I saw that somebody asked about fabric - I have cut fabric & it's a little tricky. I ironed wonder under to the fabric first, then cut the design out (a 3 for DD's bday shirt). I set the blade deep & cut speed slow. It did a pretty good job, but I still had to use scissors to finish cutting it out. I think with a little more practice I'd be golden :-)
