It's not an etch-a-sketch. This is one doodle you can't undid.
And this has really nothing to do with nothing except I am using etching stuff today. And once you etch...it can't be undid.
Oh yes, we are going to etch our little names into pyrex cooking pans! And I have been wanting to do this FOREVER! I'm super anal about my stuff. When I take it somewhere I am nervous someone is going to walk off with my pan. Well, FEAR NO MORE! (and I know this is not a new concept..I've seen it around. But I'm still doing it. call me a rebel.)
11 bones at Walmart...love the lids.
I bought this:
transfer tape...It's normally 10 at Joanns...used a 50% off coupon...(that's $5.) and it has 4 sheets that are each 12x24....after you see ALL that I made--and I only used ONE sheet of it!
used this: CRICUT!
now, the hardest part is figuring out the lettering..I wanted it on the underside to the pan...so the words would have to be backwards...if you are putting it on the underside and using this transfer tape...the red lined side is up.
Then I just peel off the red lined top leaving me with sticky side that I just pressed onto the bottom of this pan
bought this...and it's a pretty little bottle but it went rEALLLY far. It says to coat liberally (DO IT! don't be stingy) and leave on for 5 minutes...I left mine on for 30....)
then you just wash off....and the transfer tape just washed off!
then I got super carried away and did every glass pan I own...and since i'm not normal...I thought my pans had better be a little un normal too!
MY MESS! I cleaned while I was waiting for my etching stuff to activate!
a mason jar
and if you think I polished and got all the smudges off of my pans before I took pictures...
then you don't know me AT ALL.
They are all clean...but once that sunshine hits them it's like BAM....spots and fingerprints!
NOW--if you don't have a cricut...don't fear....You can still do this!!!!
Just lay out some vinyl on the glass..sketch out your design (or trace) and use an exacto knife to cut it out.
(the transfer tape wasn't the greatest with the exacto knife..so I would recommend vinyl. It works great except if won't wash off..you have to peel it!)
the exacto knife works great! it's super easy to cut through and peel up!
then just add your etching and wait!
And if you happen to have your etching stuff out...and a fish... (okay, just love this project...)

and I also thought it would be so cute to etch a stache into a cup..
kinda like these from tatortots and jello
and then I had to etch a few more glasses....
and a special one for me...
i'm like sooo mature.
come back tomorrow for one more etching process! (only one...cause i literally used ALL of my etching stuff!)
I might just start a support group for etching...!
I have seen these around lately, but you made it so much more fun than just adding your last name!! I love the oh darn it's all gone one:)
ReplyDeleteOMG, you make me laugh over your antics. Love the etched phrases! Too bad none of my pans are glass....I may need to invest so I can be a smart ass too :)
ReplyDeleteKimbo-when I did this a year ago for a Christmas present for my daughter, the glass etching messed up my porcelain sink. Did you have any problem rinsing it off?
ReplyDeleteI love them all btw. Very creative and fun!
gail
It's like once you start etching, you can't stop! I am so with you.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to try this~
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, this looks so fun.. You are right..I think etching is a good thing especially when your 9x9 glassware leaves your house.
ReplyDeleteI love ALL the etchings you did ~! Made me laugh.. Thanks~!
ta ta for now from Iowa
Ohh these are too funny! So simple, I've gotta try it! Thanks for the inspiration (I've decided to stop 'blog stalking' and finally comment heehee)
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, LOVE the movie Juno. My smart husband bought it for me at Christmas...so as soon as I read your post, I popped it in. Still amazing.
ReplyDeleteSecond of all, Etching is on my 2011 to do list. I like your "If you can read this you ate too much". Hilarious. I told my husband that I was going to etch "Sometimes I pee in this pan" on a pan He wasn't amused.
I like your blog, because I can see myself doing a lot of the things you do...Maturity is not my strong point: http://youseriouslymadethat.blogspot.com/2011/01/finger-stache.html
Case and Point.
Thanks for all the laughs.

Very cute. I have been thinking about etching jars in my kitchen so this was helpful.
ReplyDeleteI recently discovered etching too - LOVE it. And FYI, you don't even need that fancy transfer stuff - I just used a roll of contact paper I had (ran it right through my Silhouette) - -
ReplyDeleteSO cute! I love the sayings you came up with. Very fun!
ReplyDeleteThis is hilarious! I LOVE that you didn't just put your last name on them. I love the THIS IS NOT YOUR PAN! So funny.
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Amy
Love them all! I have a big bottle of this stuff - cause it's sooo addicting. Now I think I need to go get it and get to work on my Pyrex!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love all of your etching! You are hilarious by the way ;) I might just have to try this at one point this year!
ReplyDeleteI love etching projects! Your's are too funny! I recently got a silhouette and cannot wait to use it to etch several containers/vases that I own.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me, or are some of your phrases really rude?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous....it's just you.
ReplyDeletei agree with lisa! i love these!!! the one that says this is not your pan is my favorite!!! i have a cricut and have yet to do this but thank you for the tutorial!!! i love your phrases!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I LOOOOVE these! Hey if ever you take a pan of nachos to a social event you could write "This is NACHO pan" LOL
ReplyDeleteI think they are hilarious! I'm wondering if my boyfriend will let me do this to all of our glass pans and bowls. I'm going to have to buy more etching cream, because I'm almost out and I'm thinking that like you, once I start, I won't be able to stop.
ReplyDeleteok, these are hilarious. I did these for a church supersaturday activity with last names...your phrases are SO much more fun.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I just used my vinyl...you just weed out the letters then stick it on the pan. It pulled right off when it was done drying!
BTW, I don't think I have ever commented, but I LOVE your blog.
Love these!! Love the one "if you can read this you ate too much" LOVE IT!!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the rude comments on your pan!!! They are so much better than just your last name!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesomeness home skillet! Love how you definetely marked your territory!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, must spread the word!
This is great! But, aren't you worried that someone will be more likely to steal your pans? I would be!
ReplyDeleteOooh!!! Love this post!!! I JUST got all the stuff together to try etching for the first time! Can't wait to try it!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI must make that "This is not your pan" Pan NOW! Thanks for the AWESOME ideas, Kimbo!
ReplyDeleteAwesome!! Totally going to have to do something like this for Christmas gifts next year!! I too read your blog all the time! Love it! =)
ReplyDelete1. I love your blog.
ReplyDelete2. I think your sayings are funny and wish I had the guts to put them on one of my pans. ;)
3. If you don't like something on a blog, why would you even bother posting a comment? Seems like a waste of time to me.
4. I just got my Silhouette delivered today and I am itching to do some of these etchings-- should probably practice with paper first!
5. Thanks for all the funny posts and AWESOME ideas!
emily
I've wanted to do this too...
ReplyDeletelove 'if you can read this you ate too much'!!!
Another reason to get a silhouette...
ReplyDeletewow how rude... HAHA just kidding ;-) i love the sayings you chose CLASSIC!!! think im gonna have to make me some right away! (before my pans walk away, I have the same problem as you)
ReplyDeleteDUDE...I was just telling my hubs last night that I've recently lost 3 (yep 3, bc I had to buy more bc the other ones never got returned) glass pans, in the name of service (taking meals to other families)! I SOOOOooo need to do this. for. reals! I think your sayings are great :)
ReplyDeletethe sayings are hysterical!
ReplyDeleteI love these. I went to the dollar tree and picked up big beer mugs...etched guys names in it. A 4 pack of mugs cost me $4. Of course I filled each one with a bag of...caramel corn, roasted nuts, fudge and buckeyes. They looked really good all packaged up!
ReplyDeleteBut why didn't anyone make me a pan like this for Christmas? I've got a glass pie pan. I think I'll write...GO RUN on the bottom. :)
Another thing to add to my list of crafty things I want to do someday. Oh and thanks for the reminder about the mustache glasses, I was almost over the mustache thing but now I need to revisit it :) Oh yea, and you. are. awesome.
ReplyDeleteI love that etch stuff! (Made my hubby etch about 150 wine bottles for our favors at our wedding bwahahaha)
ReplyDeleteI never thought about doing a pan! What (another) great idea!
I love these! Kimbo is a hot chick, this is not your pan! Hahaha, awesome, I may have to snag that second saying.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of etching! What does your etcher's anonymous group think of all this? :) Kidding! And, yes, you are one hot chick!
ReplyDeleteI"m just a lazy cheapskate and use the $ store disposable pans. lol, they can find their way anywhere BUT back to my house! But these are super cute. We had done this for SS and I opted out because I don't use my pans for church events, but just for the laugh these would be fun!
ReplyDeleteWow- you went etching crazy! I don't blame you- I would have too! Love the one that says "This is not your pan!" I laughed thru your whole post!
ReplyDeleteOMG, love this idea! Especially love the phrase...if you can read this you ate too much. Really cute! You'll have to report back on any comments you get taking these to the next potluck.
ReplyDeletethis is great! i just got a cricut for Christmas, so i just might have to go etch crazy too! love the phrases! hilarious..
ReplyDeleteI made some of these for my sister-in-laws' for Christmas and put their last name on the pans. That way when they go to a potluck, everyone will know it is not their pan. :) I like the sayings you used though! :) So fun!
ReplyDeleteHey Kim, I linked up your rude pans today. Hope you don't mind. I thought they were too funny not to share.
ReplyDeleteCheri
Ahaha! I have a Cricut. I HAVE to try this. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the oven dishes! Exceedingly jealous of the contents of your kitchen now, and will have to investigate etching for myself. Thanks for the lovely blog. :) x
ReplyDeleteI love this!!! Everything turned out so great and I just love your sense of humor! I am a new follower - thought I was before but I am now! :)

These are so fun. Great job. I am really a cheapie and just buy clear contact paper at walmart. Huge roll and works great. Cut on my silhouette just like transfer paper. Totally addicting.
ReplyDeleteLOVE this idea!
ReplyDeleteI DID IT!!!!!! I etched almost every pan, bowl and pitcher in our home!!! You have probably saved many friendships with this one single project. I've seen the women at church get pretty ugly over what pan belongs to whom.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU for this GREAT IDEA!!! Now I can loan pans and not worry so much! Take casseroles to church dinners and keep my friends!!!
YEA!!!
You always have the BEST crafts! I bookmarked this awhile back, and just got a chance to make some. I put a picture of the one I made on my blog today with a link to your post! Thanks!

I had to come over from the hate mail blog and see your post. I love your sense of humor and your dishes, especially the "if you can read this you ate too much" hahaha cute.
ReplyDeleteI'm sitting next to my fish bowl as I'm reading this post and realized.. I don't have a freaking name for my fish! Now I HAVE to name her so I can etch it on the bowl..
ReplyDeleteP.S. I freaking LOVE your blog! So craptastic! ;)
Found you through 'hate mail' and LOVE this. I'm TOTALLY bloglifting it. But, I must say I am copying what Cami said"... I told my husband that I was going to etch "Sometimes I pee in this pan" on a pan He wasn't amused."
ReplyDeleteCami that's perfect to take to my foodie meetings. Thank you both!
Honey
Glad I am not the only one who makes a huge cricut mess!
ReplyDeleteLOL I will have to do this to my pans... my mom always tries to claim them or they almost get picked up at pot luck
I found this post from My Favorite Hate Mail. Love your sayings on the pans!
ReplyDeleteLOVE these pans. I have etched plates, saucers, glasses, and even a glass table but never thought to do pans. As someone who is frugal (AKA cheap) I thought I would share that the etching cream can be reused. Instead of washing it off, scrape off what you can while being careful not to spread it onto the unmasked glass. I use a foam brush or a popsicle stick to scrape and return to the bottle. Then rinse away the small amount that remains. I have had the same tiny bottle of etching cream for about 5 years now.
ReplyDeleteAm I doing something wrong? I can't get my pans to etch. At first I thought it was just because they were Pyrex (I saw the disclaimer on the Armor Etch bottle) but I've tried other pans and it won't work!! Help!
