store your vinyl

today is all about your vinyl..

first..i buy all my vinyl HERE at expressions vinyl.
it's my favorite store.
they have loads of colors and patterns
and it's CHEAP...and i'm cheap.
not like pretty woman cheap..
but like thrifty cheap.
my awesome bff got me these storage things for my birthday (i think she said it was from costco)
and i knew that they would be perfect to get my outrageous vinyl stash organized!!!!

i know what you are thinking...holy crap woman..do you really need all these for your vinyl.
and the answer is yes. yes i do.

the first thing i do when i get my vinyl (i buy the 12x24 cause it's the best deal) i cut it down to 12x12. i like to lay them flat cause once your mat gets a little unsticky, and the vinyl is curled...it's hard to keep it down as your cutting it.

so bin number 1: my BIG pieces of plain colored vinyl...
when i'm doing a big project i immediately have all the vinyl right there at my finger tips (it's color coordinated too)
#2.
speciality vinyl....the t-shirt vinyl...the dry erase. the chalkboard...the metallics...the patterns.
all in one.

#3
one for my scraps (keep um!!!!!) if you need ideas on what to do with them..go HERE
I always keep my negative space...you never know when you need a k outline...or a peace sign outline. these come in really handy when you need to personalize a notebook or a book or something for your kids...

also..i do a few little projects that need like just an inch or two ....and i hate cutting into my big 12x12 for that. after i cut my vinyl on the cameo..i cut around all the words or design to save as much unused vinyl as possible before i peel off the negative space!
(all the words on my bins are made from scrap pieces!)

#4. this is my transfer tape. my cameo instructions. my extra blade (i have two..one for fabric and one for paper/vinyl)
now...in here...i keep my ongoing list of colors i need. i try to always keep one 12x12 of each color...so when i notice that i'm getting low...i just jot it down. then when i see the list getting big...or i need a bunch of vinyl for a project and i'm already putting in an order..i know what i need!!!

and last but not least...
when i get my vinyl...i cut a little square and stick it on a sheet so i can see what color is which...i mean expressions vinyl has 5 different pinks! and it's always good to know right then and there what one matches the best!

expressions vinyl actually sells a little sample of each color for $4.

and my number 5---projects i'm working on...
sometimes i get interrupted....or don't have all the stuff when i start...or sometimes i cut out all the stuff i'm working on but i don't have the time to peel and stick each one...i stick them all in the one of these tubs--it's super handy because sometimes i don't know where i left off and i can just open up the bin and pick right up!

so there you go...these tubs would make the best christmas present for you crafty friends!

and look at the email i got this morning:

  1. Love love love your site. Been a long time follower. My question is...when you say you keep the negative space on the vinyl how do you do that? I peel it off so that I can get the transfer paper on but it sticks together and gets all jumbled. how do I get the image I want AND keep the negative space? If you covered this I missed it....anyway...love your storage, i keep mine all color coded in an exact bin like that but use baggies for scraps...good idea to label them. :) Happy holidays!

  5. i make sure the transfer tape covers only the piece i want to peel off---then i place it right on the whole thing and peel off carefully to only grab the right image leaving the negative space--it doesn't work with super detailed stuff-- it's got be a nice clean cut to start with! good luck!
