very late.
continue:
you know. i love blogging.
i have never once (okay maybe once) complained about it...(there was a time last summer that i got a little overwhelmed...but i blame the childrens for that...this summer i'm going to ship them to a summer camp like in parent trap so they can all find their long lost twins and switch places and i get three kids in return that are just plain happy to have a mother..regardless if she spends her time gluing stuff to other stuff.)
(the old school one with hayley and not the new one with lindsay)
but i've been feeling down...
and it's not so much the craft part...nor the spending of time writing posts (sometimes it's more fun than the crafting...)
I've always wanted to write a book...
wait...i'm off again...
it's the OTHER SIDE of bloggin...
the side no one talks about (i was whispering in a scary voice with a flashlight under my skin)
(okay..i don't have a flashlight cause it's literally 12:21 at night and i'm all tucked in under my blanket and i'm sure the flashlights are all dead cause my daughter likes to read late at night (unannounced to her mother until her mother goes to make her bed and finds the flashlight covered in drool)
(again..crap...)
There is this side of bloggin that is no fun...The side where you have to worry about stuff...
like SEO..
who knows what that is?
Something
Evil
Okay?
Super
Exaggerated
Opinion?
okay..i suck at that..
it's search engine optimization....
no reallly...i didn't make that one up.
It's stuff us bloggers do so when people google something...it's OUR blogs that pop up and then we can be rich and famous and make loads of money...
or just so our blog pops up.
and SEO is saying that i should go back and rename all my pictures (instead of IMG 4543.)
(Seo is a #$#%$)
Have we met? I take a bazillion pictures. i put pictures where literally no pictures are needed.
an overshare of pictures. I can't even write all this without going back and googling pictures to add
(and the ones i pick i'm sure have been renamed so they popped up first.)
I refuse. REFUSE to go back and rename all my pictures. i won't even try to.
do you know long it to took me to get my tutorial page all organized? and i had only been blogging for a year at the time...it was many a day... cereal was the breakfast lunch and dinner....
it just ain't happening.
and on top of seo..there is the "rules" about giveaways on facebook..and writing that weird paragraph about getting paid for you opinion and they are 100 % mine. (i would totally write..they are 75% mine...25% the money.) and did you know that if you have you web address on your big picture thingy on facebook, facebook could delete you? (thanks kim!) and stumbling (still have no clue) and updating you tutorials page, and submitting projects, and making sure your advertisers are properly rotated and plug ins for wp(?) and linky parties --- i still am a blogspot and haven't switched over to .com cause i'm scared (and clueless)
and ANOTHER thing...
i feel like I need to be a computer tech to keep up with all the gadgets and widgets that are out for bloggers these days...Just when i feel like i'm doing okay and finally figure out html I go to someone else's blog and see all fancy tutorials pop ups and links that magically show up when you reach the end of her weekend round up. (it fascinates me everytime.)
I just get to the point where i'm all, what happened to everyone just having the backgrounds from hot bliggity blog? you just pick the fun polka dots with the ribbon and flower and you're done
(if you have a blog that has that EXACT background you just earned yourself 1000 glue gun points.)
and let's talk emails:
i get a lot
(i can ONLY imagine the amount JEN gets...geesh!)
and i hate them.
now-- don't get me wrong...if you are emailing me about a question or comment...i'm okay with those (i encourage it!!!) and if you are emailing me to say how much you love me (my email is kimbowest (21) at gmail.com)...i print those off and put them in my journal....
but i get alot of emails from companies about advertising.....and i made myself a rule when this blog started getting serious:
I said, Kim, don't become a money loving ho.
aka. DON'T BECOME A SELL OUT
(i also told myself i would not embarrass my mother...sorry about the ho mom.)
and some of these companies want to pay me to write about them..or to advertise for them...and i have to say no. cause I try to keep it sTRICTLY craft here at agaagg
(you know besides those annoying random posts that sometimes sneak out..that include no crafts but a bunch of whining.)
and if you know me like only my sisters and mothers do (and sometimes my husband) i don't do no. i will tell you yes..just to avoid telling you no. Hey kim do you want to come jump of this cliff for me ...please?
gulp..sure i do.
I have a "just say no" problem. i'm working on it. (i don't do drugs...i can 'just say no' to that....even though by the time you get to the end of my post you might think i do)
(also closely related is my "i don't answer my phone cause i never know what the person is going to ask me and i will say yes regardless of what it is" problem)
hey kim do you want to watch my 5 kids for me while i go on a cruise for a week?
gulp...ohsure i do.
i'm a screener...if i like what i hear on the voicemail you will get a call back.
I literally had to scroll back up to find out what i'm talking about.
saying no.
i hate it.
so when people contact me i have like anxiety about being all, i'm super sorry but i just don't think portapotties really fit in with the theme of my blog....i'll have to pass.
(okay i have not been contacted by a porta potty company.
and i would have said yes cause it would be funny.)
(dudes that was totally scary googling porta potties....i was NOT sure what was going to pop up.)
(or poop up...)
ha.
but i hate it...and sometimes i don't do it...and those emails just sit there taunting me from my inbox...
seriously...
I have days were i wake up and i'm all...kim. strap on those big girl panties cause today you are going to answers those emails.
(i also have days were i wake up and i'm all...kim...quit talking to yourself cause people are starting to look at you funny. but then i just say shut up to that kim...)
NOW..before you start making assumptions...(do i have a few of you panicked?) I'M Not quitting...
i'm not even slowing down...i still have craft ideas coming at me like wildfire. i literally have 98 posts in drafts...
i guess what i'm trying to say is that sometimes my blog feels like a 4,000 square foot house that has 3 kids, a dog and a husband that i'm solely in charge of cleaning...(on top of doing the other stuff i do...like paint toe nails and kiss boo boos and poor cereal for dinner)
i just miss my 950 foot studio apartment above a garage when everything was just like sweep sweep sweep dust dust dust load the dishwasher and done.
I just don't want to spend the rest of my life chained to the computer.
i just want to craft.
and then write ridiculous posts that go on entirely too long..
that have pictures named whatever the crap my computer puts them as..
then i want to jump on the tramp with my kids.
and have a water fight.
and eat marshmallows
and pin some pins on pinterest
and kiss my husband.
a lot...LOT.
If i remembered how to do math i would do it right now...and take the hours i put into blogging...and divide that by what i make in advertising
and i can bet my glue gun i'm making about 58 cents an hour.
i do it cause i love it.
i really really do.
if in 10 years i'm still doing it.
i will be happy.
i just get overwhelmed sometimes.
and sometimes i take that and vent on my blog about it.
and lucky you gets to spend 25 minutes reading it..
(i really hope my husband reads this...i think he will be relieved to know that it wasn't his fault (this time) that i've been in such a grumpy mood this past week)
(and i'm not just saying that cause i want a bunch of comments...just go..spread the love.)
Excellent. I have several of those emails unanswered in my inbox right now. I say delete them and go glue something! It is definitely not worth your time and happiness. XOXO
ReplyDeleteOMGosh that was so funny! Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who is just plain too scared to switch over to a .com. I keep saying, "today's the day', but the thought of having to re-do HTML hidden codes from blogging network sites, and other html "possible re-do's" just keeps me a blogspot. I totally hear ya! and....I've decided that I just can't help myself...I love life too much and renovating too much to be the top notch blogger (that I wish I was), so I'll be a second notch blogger....with really cool projects! lol

Just wanted you to know how proud I am of you. You are so talented and so awesome and I love you so much Kim. Don't get down on yourself your great. So let's take a vacation and when we get back from wherever we go you'll be totally refreshed and ready to go and I'll be the totally awesome husband that supports his wife ha-ha love you Kim.
ReplyDeleteThis made me smile. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who screens my calls because I'm afraid of what the other people are going to ask me to do, or want from me. Anxiety for the win! I'm lucky (maybe) not to have your problem of advertisings and shout outs nagging me, but even in my little tiny blogland I do have the same kinds of pressures. I hope they work themselves out, and that the post has been therapeutic, because it sure was nice to read! It's good to see the not so golden side sometimes.
ReplyDeleteCome visit!

LOL - All I can say is "Ditto"! (did you see the movie Ghost?) FYI - I have a canvas up of the "A clean house is a sign of a wasted life" Such a great philosophy! Thanks for a great post! Hugs from New Zealand :)
ReplyDeleteIf i read the whole post means im enjoying :) and i enjoy every post of your blogg, i totally love your sense of humor even if you are not in a good mood! .... So kim i live in mexico, have two kids 6 months and 2 years old... Would you take care of them for the week? I heard is not easy for you to say no... Haha... Im not thaaaaat far :)
ReplyDeleteCrap, I didn't even know we could switch to a .com
ReplyDeleteI get the blogging blues quite often, I spose you would after blogging for 3 years plus which is why i've just started another blog 'A Girl and her Glue Stick' then I some how found you (so glad I did) so I deleted thinking we sounded too similar then I thought stuff it, there's enough room on the blogosphere for a gun and a stick and I will have somewhere else to go when I get the blues with my other blog.
Jeez I waffle, anyway don't try keeping up with all the new things, carry on as you are, I for one have loved stalking your blog over the last 48 hours and i'm sure i'm not the only one.
Beki xxx
Ugh! I know the feeling all to well ..
ReplyDeleteI have gotten some scary advertising emails . I agree with the above send them to Trash or Spam and go Glue something Girly ..
Love your Blog
Stay Happy
Hugs
Brooke
Stay happy and stress fee...so glue and glue and craft and craft and chuck the emails to trash. There, now don't you feel better?
ReplyDeleteHugs
SUeAnn
Wow girl that was looooooong and I loved reading every single word of it! Everything you made so much sense and I found myself nodding and agreeing with a bunch of it! I never knew some of it, so you learn something new every day, only I think I just learnt several, can that be possible, is now.
ReplyDeletexx
From someone who makes a living online (not blogging) SEO SUCKS! it's confusing and time consuming and really expensive to pay for and even when we did pay for it the results were barely noticable. It's such a frustrating process.
ReplyDelete{hugs} Kim. Your crafts are awesome. They are the real reason people find your blog!
This was a wonderful read! I deleted that SEO widget thingy from my blog last week. I say keep your pics named whatever the heck you want! Life is short & that is a crazy waste of precious time IMO.
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time saying no to others too, so I feel your pain there also.... anyway, your blog is just plain fun to read, *hugs!* and I hope you have a great day enjoying life and your family. :)
I've just started blogging my crafts. I have no bling. Eeeek!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog!
You are to awesome! I loved this post and especially the SEO part.. I dislike SEO with a passion. It takes so much of the fun out of naming blog post titles (renaming pictures, I got around that with Lightroom, I just name it what I want before I export to PShop.)
ReplyDeleteBut I refuse to go back also and rename all the pictures I had before.
Keep doing what you are doing, I found your blog from another blogger :) that's the best "SEO" out there and I have been following you almost as long as you have been blogging.
Your amazing and so are your crafts and posts. :D
I feel the same way... my blog will never be a million-dollar venture! I love crafting and I will keep posting about it- period.
ReplyDeleteI love you! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd you know, I think it's kind of cool that you have to worry about an incredibly annoying amount of ad emails. That means a ton of other people love you too.
And don't worry about hurting their feelings, they probably get dissed multiple times a day.)
You are awesome! I love honest and real people and I love your blog!! You are inspiring and I secretly hope I am in Idaho one day at a Joann's and I meet you unexpectedly...that would be cool (for me anyway)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog Kimbo. Thanks for doing what you do.
ReplyDeleteKeep Calm & Keep Crafting! xxx
ReplyDeleteI love your blog :) Love your creativeness, your 'tude, all the fun stuff you come up with :) Hey, we only live an hour away from each other, so we're practically neighbors, so if some day we run into each other at the craft store, that would be cool. Can't wait to see the other 98 posts :) keep on gluing!
ReplyDeleteSpreading the love to you. I love your posts, your crafts and your authentic sense of humor. Take a few days away from the computer. We will be here when you return.
ReplyDeleteHoly Crap so I know what you are talking about! I HATE SEO!! and who can keep up with all the giveaway rules and disclaimer rules?? not me!
ReplyDeleteI love blogging too but it does get overwhelming trying to remember what I am supposed to be doing, like keeping my advertisers happy and keeping my readers happy and keeping my family happy... too much sometimes!
Just keep doing what you are doing because I love to read your posts!
And I do Math and I am pretty sure that most bloggers make around 2 cents an hour! ;)
I read your whole post! Blogging is a lot more work than people realize. Have you thought about writing up (when you're not so stressed) a form letter response that basically tells those ad companies no, but in a polite way? Then, you can read the email, see if it fits in here with AGAAGG, and if not, just copy and paste that baby in a response. I am terrible at saying no as well, but I am only one woman and there are only so many hours in the day, so it has to be done. Oh, and if someone calls and catches you on the spot to ask you for something, just say, "Let me get back to you on that." That way you are not outright saying no and you can have some time to think about if you REALLY want to help out - and it also gives you an opportunity to say no through a follow up email or text. :) Remember, people will still read your blog even if you don't have the latest gadgets! They come here for the content, not all the crap they can click on. If you need help setting up your own .com on blogger, let me know! It is really easy - I promise. And you still use blogger exactly the same way, all that changes is your blog url.
ReplyDeleteIf it weren't all true it might be funny. I blogged 16 hours a day 7 days a week for 8 years. I had my blog hijacked, lost my readers over it TWICE. Other bloggers are evil and mean - it felt many times like it was middle school all over again. I was blogging along and grew BIG for a nobody and then people (other bloggers) were all crazy. I helped many start blogs, answered a bazillion questions. Many became UBER famous and went on to do the TV gigs. Last count there were 7 of them. Not once did any single one say even a simple thank you.
ReplyDeleteI kept doing what I did because I knew that that my niche was now overflowing but that I had loyal readers who depended on me. Or so I thought. They were all thankless too. I was almost blind and crazy before I just STOPPED. I mean you can only work for $.32 an hour for so long before you are ready to move to a 3rd world country. RIGHT?
I said screw the SEO, stopped blogging to suit others and do what *I* wanted. Google had already closed accounts and kept all of my earned income. Nothing like being blackballed by a search engine either. I had a page rank 5 which was flipping awesome for me and then it was a 0 like I was a newbie. Uh screw Google too.
I gave up real life to blog and that was not fun. So, if there is no fun it was time to quit. I did. Much happier chasing my sewing machine and new embroidery machine and projects which is how I found you.
My suggestion, pull back. Post less. Don't let yourself or your family suffer over the blog. No one in the blogosphere will die without you but you WILL be missed by those that do care and if they care, they'll stick around for when you do make a post.
Another suggestion, while the kids are at camp take yourself on a vacation. Or do one day vacations for YOU all summer long. Recharge your batteries.
Oh and don't worry about SEO. Don't worry about Google. If your email piles up, scan for the important stuff and delete the rest. They'll send more. TRUST ME! I now do email about once a month for the blog and I am not ashamed to say that now.
Good luck and get some rest. :)
You know you wrote an awesome post when your husband leaves a comment - that's rock star status :)
ReplyDeleteso yep, great post - - And I didn't even know people even thought about going back and renaming pictures - that sounds like pure torture!!
keep the fabulousness coming!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS POST... and all your witty side step comments, they cracked me up. I agree with everything you said. I just got back from SNAP a few weeks ago.. and SEO crap scares me. I don't even know if there are other plugins or what have yous for Blogger? I thought plugins were a WP thing? did I read that right in your post? Hmmm? Blogging has become almost un-fun. I miss the days of just creating and no one was hung up on the possibilities of it being a business and making money. We were just creating and crafting and enjoying our skill. Now that there is this potential to be huge.. you have switching to WP, have SEO all correct, networking, media.. etc. Its so overwhelming.. (kinda like my long comment-HA!) Anyhoo, I am still Blogspot too, because I am terrified to switch to .com and don't get me started on switching to WP (heart attack) Anyway, loved your post. Thank you, lots of love, jen P.S. perhaps answer your emails 5 at a time. XO
ReplyDeleteYou are AWESOME.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say that because you're probably one of my favoritest blogs ever, and I just read a post on someone's blog telling me to leave some comment love. :)
I kind of pretty much totally absolutely loved and adored this post.
ReplyDeleteKind of pretty much totally absolutely.
Yo go, girl. You are not a money loving ho. I love the word ho. But ho you are not.
Can we be honest for a moment? Let's. Sometimes I get really mad/jealous/upset/annoyed that their are blogs out there making tons of money, and being all high school popular out there, and I feel like their content, pictures, writing style, etc., is just so-so.
Who just yelled "sour grapes"??
But I don't want any of what you just described. I don't want any of what Char described a while back, either.
I am no phony. And I gotta enjoy doing what I do, to the 10 people I do it for.
And you can enjoy doing what you do, for the 20,000 people you do it for. 'Cause you're no phony, either.
I wouldn't even bother responding to any of those emails. Only so much time in the world, know what I'm sayin'?
Oh my goodness... I loved reading this post. I am right there with you! Sometimes all of the "other stuff" that accompanies blogging can be overwhelming... Just stick with what ya wanna do- the rest doesn't matter:)SEO... SMESH-EO!:)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post!!! I totally love the blogging part but that whole SEO thing is awful. I don't want to change the names of my pictures either. I also don't want to be a money ho either...
ReplyDeleteI prefer blogs that don't sell out and don't do a bunch of sponsored posts. I love bloggers who blog and craft because they want to not because they get paid to do it. I say jump on that tramp and eat those marshmallows (just not at the same time) and blog just for YOU!!! Because YOU are AWESOME!!
ReplyDeleteOk I know I have posted this same comment on your blog before but it needs repeating! I love you and the way you blog so don't change!! I opened my google reader this morning and had 35 new posts to read. I started scrolling through quickly realizing everyone was posting the same crap!! Deals, giveaways, sponsored posts, and post about building a house but "these opinions are "100%" my own!" CRAP!! Seriously I don't think there was one real "craft" post! Then I came across yours, and I was sucked in! You are so real and that is why we all love you! You said "post a comment on your favorite blog" so here it is! I make or do a craft weekly and I have made more crafts from your blog alone than all the other "blogs" (cause 98% of them are not blogs anymore) combined!! Your crafts are real, they aren't HUGELY time consuming or cost GOBS of money. I see something and think that is way cute and I think I can probably do that, instead of seeing "crafts" on other blogs and thinking that is way cute but I don't have the talent, time or money to make something like that! Anyway, we love you, all of you and we love EXACTLY how you blog! And we don't care if we see a post every day or once a month! Seriously, we just love what you do and how you do it! Plus you know you had an awesome post when your hubby comments!
ReplyDeleteP.S. - don't worry about responding to all the comments! Too time consuming and we love you anyway!!
You are doing a great job.. and who died and made "those people" the experts on all things? Screw SEO, it is all about the content.. build good content and people will come. If it was just about SEO then there would be a million successful bloggers who are posting their properly labeled photos of nothing interesting. :)
ReplyDeleteDo the part that you love and leave the rest. Nobody died because their email didn't get responded too. (Well, okay if someone emails you and says "I'm dying of a snakebite please send the antidote!" then maybe someone died.. but not the port-a-potty advertising types. ;)
Remember..it isn't about keeping up with the Joneses.. it is about doing what you do because you love it.. Since clearly it isn't about the big payout of 58 cents per hour!
Hang in there.. and blog on!
I am going to take pride in agreeing with exactly what you said and say you rock.
ReplyDeleteI'm not switching to WP.
I'm not gonna be a .com
just gonne be a blogspot for as long as they will let me, gonna blab as long as people will listen, craft as long as people will watch.
Will always follow you b/c you crack me up and I LOVE that you googled portapotties PHWAAA
love your blog! i think your great
ReplyDeleteO.k... I blog stalk... and I blog stalk you. I think one of the first things I found was the tutorial about the Star Wars pictures... I still plan on doing it, but ever since then... I have stalked your blog. I love your sense of humor that you put into writing and all of the crafty crap that you do. Oh, and you are like the 4th person that I have ever commented on (on their blog... because I just don't comment -- like EVER! I only stalk--that's just who I am... {but one of the comments that I did make was about how I liked the peacock painting and that I voted for you on SYTYC?}) So here I am... spreading the love again... You see, I had too... for you. 'Cause you are AWESOME! ('nuff said) :)
ReplyDeleteI know I'm really late to this party, but with life, it's the first time I've had a chance to see your post. I'm one of your quiet stalkers that adore your blog and you! I totally understand your frustration and I'm just a tiny blog in this big ocean. I love crafting and I love blogging about it and everything else that goes with it, makes me nervous and crazy! Just go with what you love to do and don't let the other crap stress you out. You're awesome, Kim, and you know your priorities are that beautiful family of yours!
ReplyDeleteI hear ya friend! Making the move over to WordPress made this whole blogging thing a trillions times more complicated... There's just SO much sometimes right! Sometimes I feel like I get all caught up in the widgets and the HTML and the buttons and the ads that I forget why I started blogging... But I'm with you. I love it and I won't quit! SO GLAD TO HEAR YOU WON'T BE QUITTING either. Cause for real that would ruin my whole week.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea about all the blog stuff, since mine is more like a journal with 8...maybe 9 followers. and probably most of those are some distant great aunt twice removed something something. who knew great aunts followed blogs? anyway, I seriously laughed a lot from this post and then read it to my husband so he could laugh. you're so funny, and I'm glad you aren't quitting :)
ReplyDeleteJust to piggyback on everyone else, I visit your blog because you actually do crafts I could attempt to do. You are funny. You keep it real, yo. :)
ReplyDeleteI really don't comment on the others that I read (and that's a grand total of 4 other blogs...only 1 other one does crafts as well) so the fact that you've seen my name a few times on here should tell you I'm dedicated to you.
I have to echo a few others and say create a rejection letter for those emails where they want you to do something you don't want to do. Easy peasy.
Just keep glue gunning and crafting and being your hilarious self. That's all we can ask for.
I just gotta say...I totally love you. That was an awesome post. As a fellow blogger, all the ins and outs of blogging can be overwhelming and, honestly, depressing. I feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteSide note - I also have a really hard time saying no. Actually, just confrontation of any kind. I've been know to allow myself to be charged extra by the cable company just because the thought of having to call and complain makes me just about break into hives. So...you're not alone.
That being said, can you please promote my pee pads. They'd be a really good fit here. ;)
P.S. Yes, I'm kidding. I just wanted to make that clear.
Ha, ha! I got a kick out of reading this post and hearing you just rambling on in my head! Love it! You sound just like me sometimes...except that I don't have a blog. I just love to craft and get carried away finding all the neat ideas out there. But I can relate to your computer woes and your creative mind battling the whole techie responsibility for having a blog. I work on a computer all day, and have to keep up with understanding how things work in computer world when all I REALLY want to do is craft and make fun cute things! I'm totally posting by my desk, the second to last image of "This is your life.Do what you love".
ReplyDeleteKeep on trekking...you have a great sense of humor and I'm glad I found your site for both inspiration and laughs even if it's at the expense of your insanity! I mean that in a funny, nice way =)
I LAUGHED OUT LOUD!
ReplyDeleteI blog for the love of craft too - absolutely....
So much of this made me laugh because I think the same things.
You rock!
No response necessary :)
Lindsay
I like your blog. If you're able to craft AND blog about it AND put some cents in your pocket for the effort THEN YOU GO GIRL! That was cheesy, but I don't care...
ReplyDeleteI totally feel your pain sista! I recently went to Bloggy Boot Camp in April and I left there feeling like my head was going to explode! I have a year old blog, on blogger, with computer generated image names, I don't watch SEO, or have tons of followers or whatever. But I left there feeling like I was blogging all wrong and I needed to marry my computer to get this all figured out. Since then, I've pretty much avoided my computer like the plague. It's not that I don't want to blog, I just don't want to feel like I need to be doing more when I'm working. Not that I'm happy you are having the blogging blues, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one. I have quit answering most of my emails too, so don't feel bad. Just go craft!
ReplyDelete
