table how to

let's talk table!!!!
my table is a hand me down from my sister.
who i think got it from my brother.

and as i have said many a time.
we don't buy nice things....

we have kids.

so i just thought i would overhaul it a bit...
it started with CANS of krylon dual and some sanding.....
and that ALONE made me super happy.
one of the chairs broke so i requested a bench from my handy dad for my birthday last year..
and since he loves me...
and it was much better. we all (as a family of 5) could function.

then we invited people over...and it was like we needed to eat in shifts.

so i decided to make a table top!
I went to HOME DEPOT and got this wood (for about $20 for all of it) (i was going in for the expensive stuff...and when i laid them out..they bowed as much as this pine..so i went for cheap.
when can i say--i'm a cheap kinda girl.
i had the guy working cut them at 5 feet....and i laid them out to see what side i wanted and which ones fit better together...

and then i made a REALLY stupid mistake.
i stained the wood....I just wanted to get started.
i'm dumb.
but..it's so pretty...

and so freakin messy.
and then my beau came home and i had him screw on the wood...

his drill made these fun marks so the screws sit flush (?)

brooks and dunn hard working man is going through my head right now....

then take some wood putty (that is stainable) and fill those up...
so when you screw them on...some aren't flush....

so you have to sand...

and sand...

and freakin sand some more until it's all smooth...
and it makes a huge mess....and the stain make it even more of a mess (which is why it would be easier to wait!)

finally..when all the sanding is done..you need to finish it off...
so i went to home depot again.
saw this...
and turned around...
and got on my computer and emailed bob vila herself
the one.
the only
tremayne.

who told me to buy this...(she made it idiot proof and sent me a picture. love you mand!)

it was super fast...i did a coat...3 hours..sand...coat...3 hours..sand...coat 24 hours.
done.

so i used the drying time to not cook dinner and make the hubs take us to dinner....
 the underneath....

now..before i finished it off... i took this picture..and i really like the distressed...but i'm not sanding inside my house again. i've had to dust for days.

another before
my husband had to actually have someone pass the salt. before he could reach it wherever he was.

  1. What the? I never would have thought to add a table top on top of a table. You are a genius! It turned out just gorgeous and I love everything about it. And I love that you call Mandi Bob Vila. LOL!

  2. This is amazing! I've been dreaming about a reclaimed wood table to use for family dinners...instead of my own tiny hand-me-down one (that looks very much like yours pre finishing). The reclaimed wood one is about $1500. With a little boy, the table must double as a homework station, and a toy truck driving range. Going to give this a shot--but will sand/stain outside. Love it!

  7. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this table! My hubs has always wanted a fancy formal dining room table so that's what we have, but your style is more my taste and I'm totally jealous of your super cute table!

  8. That was genius! We used a huge piece of plywood as a table top once, over our normal small table... Needless to say this looks much nicer! ;)

  10. Dude-- did you just call me Bob Villa?

Just when I thought I couldn't love you more. You go and do something like this. . .and totally redeem yourself!! ;)

Kay I am in love with the table. Told my next door neighbor with the same table dilemma to do what you did with yours just the other day.

  11. I love the table, and although I know it wasn't the point but I totally love the bench! I think a bench is such a simple way to liven up a regular kitchen table.
