fhe blocks

monday night has been said aside as family night (family home evening aka FHE)
we don't plan anything (i mean like softball games or plans with friends)
it's a night that we hang out as a family.
we start with a prayer..
sing a song
read some scripture
teach a lesson (like david and goliath)
and then do an activity (like be david and shoot dad with marshmallows...)
and then (of course) we have to have a treat.
something special like root beer floats...
or making homemade lemonade (that one was sticky)

and we love it.
so much in fact that if something happens on monday that we can't do family night we can EXPECT a huge meltdown by kids.

and when it comes around to monday we have kids that always want to plan the activity...
and then a mom and dad that plans everything else...

and after 7 straight weeks of candyland.....
i thought, hmmmm....maybe we need to switch it up.

(and lucky for me our super saturday had the BEST idea...)
enter FHE BLOCKS!

i had my dad cut a 4x4 (and i will spare you the rant i went on about it ACUTALLY being a 3 1/2 by 3 1/2 and having my dad correct me about 20 times.)

but he cut them into blocks (3 1/2 by 3 1/2)
then i jumped on my scal and planned out my blocks....
(just making sure that they all fit your 4 by 4 (which is actually 3 1/2 by 3 1/2. and no. i won't let it die)

i got to use all my pretty colors of vinyl from Expressions vinyl
and cut them out and peeled away the excess...
added some transfer tape (if you aren't a transfer tape believer..then poor you. imagine taking the p and peeling it off and placing it where it needs to go....then the r... then the a...but the a isn't straight so peel it up and reput it back down until it looks straight and repeat all the way to the end....
then turn your block and start over with song.  now, imagine taking your transfer tape..rubbing it over...peel and stick..rub and peel off...everything is perfectly aligned. FANTASTIC!)

oh transfer tape..if i wasn't into total love with my glue gun..it would be you (picture me with my hands over my sewing machine ears....) (i also feel like this is a good time to mention that i'm painting my dresser..and there might be some fumes and even as i write this i am telling myself to edit and shut up)
okay....the fhe block:

for the all the names I used the scal's basic shapes and made a little symbol for each person...

then you toss it...and see what you are in charge of for the week.....

and let me tell you. this week, game is mine...and someone is going down in battleship...
since we only have 5 in our family i added a roll again...
but you could put family choice..
and if you have more than 6 you could stick mom/dad together...
or do just numbers and then assign certain people a number....

and because i have a ton of 3 1/2 by 3 1/2s. i thought i would whip one up for my brother and his family....
using pictures!
We just got our photos done so i just happened to have tons on my computer..i just resized them down to squares and added them all on word and printed....
and just cut them out and mod podged them on!

I've never used Mod Podge, but am thinking I should add it to my repertoire of crafty's as I keep seeing projects like this that are so cute!

  2. I love that idea! what fun for the kids, to roll the blocks! And I agree, what's up with a 4x4, 2x4, etc NOT being what it's called???? I think back in the "day" they used to be. Hmmm.

  6. Kimberly, this is your dad commenting and for others who this may interest. Rough lumber is 4X4, 2X4, 1X4 respectively. After it is milled, its finished size is 3 1/2 X 3 1/2. You aren't the only one that can beat a subject to death!!!

  7. What a great idea! I had made a chart for our family but now that we're in our house we don't have anywhere to put it. This is great to be able to put away.

  8. I like your Dad!
And I love these dice! Our only problem is we need more kids... doesn't work quite so well with just one. This would also work pretty well with playdates for who got to choose the game, or what game to play for how long, etc.. Cute!
