cricut love (semi)-alternatives to scal

so i feel like a brat. talking about scal (sure cuts a lot) and now it's not available with your cricuts.
i'm totally not trying to rub it in your face.  honest.

and i'm really sorry that you can't get it anymore. (it's dumb.)
do you see the other stuff it's still works worth...so if you have those cutters you can still buy it HERE

and this is MY understanding with scal.

if you have scal..it will work with any cricut...
you just can't buy it new anymore
so (i think) if you wanted to buy a new cricut and have scal already..you should be able to use it.
(as long as you don't update your scal...it has to stay as scal 2)
(please correct me if i'm wrong!)

but now you can only purchase scal 3  and it's does NOT work with cricut.

(i'm going to hope (fingers crossed) that provo craft comes out with something similar...but i won't hold my breath cause it basically will make their cartridges obsolete.)

so i did a little research to show you some other awesome things that cricut has.....(and it's not GREAT news...sorry)

The gypsy:

they gypsy is a handheld little computer thing. you can plug in all the cartridges you have (you only have to do this once) and it stores them all...then you can lay in your bed at night and design away. (This is perfect if you don't have a computer..but i guess you wouldn't be reading this if you didn't have a computer....)
it does a lot of what scal does as far as you can turn it and adjust the size and connect them...but you can only use the cartridges.....no outside source)
but when you buy them you can get a new font with it.....so that's a plus two.
minus 3 for the price though. ouch.
they have loads of videos to show you how it works but the first one gave a nice overview of what it does and it was the only one i watched...
(go here...scroll down and watch the first video test drive )

okay...next up is:
cricut design studio software

this one is really cool...the program is alot like scal...weld, turn, adjust size.

but as usual, there is a catch. no outside fonts or dingbats. it has EVERY SINGLE cartridge provo craft has ever had on it..BUT (and this is like a kim kardashion of BUTS) ..

YOU CAN ONLY CUT WITH WHAT CARTRIDGES YOU HAVE. So it shows you all it's got, you can play around and design..but in the end it only works with the ones you have spent money on. This would be good if you own a ton of cartridges..and it's fun to see what all the cartridges have to offer before you buy...like a test drive. (and they continue to update it so when they came out with new one cartridges they will be put on the design studio..so you will always have them all.

okay...I was re-reading all my comments..cause i know you guys are smarter than me (and omg hilarious. i was dying laughing) and someone mention fairy cut...

so i researched it...
and i watched the youtube videos...and really liked what i saw (you can draw your own designs) and basically do more than the scal. (wait! before i get you hopes all up!) i looked up fairy cut...and the link that youtube, google and their facebook page all gives me comes up with a runtime error...

i did find this one

but i think it smells fishy..just saying. buyer beware.

oh. wait look what i just found on their facebook page:

We no longer sell Fairy Cut version 1.13 (version compatible with Cricut®) on fairycut.com.

We now sold Fairy Cut version 2.0 (version compatible with Silhouette, CraftRobo & SM cutters)

Cricut® scrapbooking cutters are good cutters for beginner, but the maker of this cutter won't allow third parties developpers like us to make a driver compatible with their cutters.

Cricut® scrapbooking cutters are reallly cheap to buy, but the compagie keep their customers in a close market, wich means that you are bond to bought only their products. You won't be able to purchase any "Cassettes" from designer that are not approved by Cricut and those cartridges are really expensives. More you have to bought all the other accessories from them and many customer have made complaints about the quality of their scrapbooking software they even have created a Facebook
page against ProvoCraft wich have more than 2000 fans. They have all the same message: "Stay away from PC ".

This is why we don't recommend our user to purchase a Cricut cutter, you will be better deserve if you go for a more open cutter like Pazzles inspirations, Bosskut Studio, Sm-Cutter These cuttters are more expensive to bought but they have thousands logos compatible with theses cutters available for free on the Internet. In the long run this solution will make you save money.

Many of these cutters came with really great scrapbooking software like Funtimescrapbooking, Pazzles inspiration studio or Bosskut.
All these softwares have great features like Rhinestones creations, convert a image into a cutting logo, Print and cut images in colors,
it have simple tools to let you create your own scrapbooking shapes and those software let you use all your windows fonts and it will also
work with any font that you will donwload from the Internet. These software are also compatibles with all the scrapbooking shapes format
like WPC, SVG, PDF(vector file), EPS, AI, JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP.

(i left the spelling mistakes for funnsies.and geez...them seem really sore at cricut)

okay, i'm about to get real with you....hang on...let me go cover up my cricut's ears.

so, if i was thinking to buy a cutting machine...and i didn't have the grasshopper (aka cricut).

and scal is not available (cause it's not)

I would buy a silhouette.

there.

i said it.

i'm sorry.
but i'm totally cheap.

and the cartridges KILL me!

if you want an awesome how-to all about the shilhoutte (spelling mistake not on purpose but purposely left there)....I am momma is have a week long event of it...(and a giveaway so go check it out and enter..all in one)

, you know...as much as we complain about the price of cartridges..they sure are darn cute...
and really one of a kind..
and i'm a visual person so i really love looking through the book and seeing it all right there in person..

i mean look how cute these monsters are....
they put them on bingo cards! i mean...so adorable!!!
source (this is the cricut blog..and it's great..cause it links directly to all the supplies they used!)
i might still have to buy this cartridge....

I have found some cheap cartridges on Amazon and ebay (love it cause you can watch it and bid only if it's super cheap) and hallmark scrapbook (don't ever buy a cartridge full price!!!!)

do you have a favorite cartridge? or an awesome cricut project? leave me a comment..i would love to see what you are doing with your cutting machines!

onto fonts:(for those of you with scal and mtc)
this weeks font is all big bold bubbles and blocks, baby. (and circles but that didn't start with a b)

remember most of these are found at dafont (you can go here to read all about fonts)

this one might not work with your cricut...maybe if you were doing one letter reallyyyyy big cause it's a lot to cut out...but i still totally love it.

and i found this really cute blog that did some halloween fonts
you can go HERE

remember if you missed any cricut love posts you can go HERE

  1. I agree with you. I love my Cricuit, but if I had to do it over, I would invest in a Silhouette. I got my Cricuit on sale at Jo-Anns pretty cheap, plus I have had mine long enough that I have SCAL. The cartridges are expensive and I have bought a few, but there is no way I could buy all I wanted. Now I need to experiment with SCAL more and get over my fear of cutting vinyl.

  2. Do you know anything about the Cricut Craft Room they are creating? I see that it's up on their website but everytime I try to test drive it, it won't load. I'm sure it will only work with the cartridges you have, but at least it will allow you to work online to do things like weld, turn & adjust size. It's also free. I'm just afraid it won't work right! I wish i would have went with a silhouette!

  3. I loved my Cricut, but now it just sits unused. The cartridges kill me, here in the UK most retail at £40.00 at least, and little to no hope of grabbing a sale bargain.
I'm sure more people would use it if they left SCAL usable.

If I were going to get replacement I'd definitely go for a Silhouette!

  4. I am totally with you on if SCAL was not available I would not have the cricut...However, where you mentioned the gypsy one option that you might be able to use is checking out your local Library. Sometimes they will have cartridges that you can use on-site and if your gypsy store the cartridge and lets you use it without having it there.....well it's kind of like getting around having to buy them all. To be honest because of PC trying so hard to be the "apple" of cutting machines, I am considering switching to the silhouette.

  5. I love my Cricut, but I wish I had the option of cutting things out I had on my computer. Or at least adjust stuff around easier. I have been wanting to try out that Craft Room and haven't had any luck yet.

Here is my latest Cricut project:

  6. I hear you. My Cricut has been great but I never ended up with SCAL so I've been dreaming of a Silhouette lately.

  7. As a fairly new Cricut user, I'd love to know what you (and your other readers) think are the basic "must have" cartridges? Which ones do you use the most and cannot live without? Since they are so gosh darn expensive, I'd like to first invest in the ones I'll get the most mileage out of...I've bought a couple but they are so specific in the shapes that I don't use them very often.(I apologize if this topic has already been a part of your Cricut Love series! ...which I love you for doing, even if I don't have SCAL, lol)

  8. I have all the comments and I agree I would of bought the silouhette if I would have not bought my cricuit 2 years ago. When I bought my cricuit I was lokking at all the programs that they had and I chose a program called MAKES THE CUT it works still I believe with cricuit machines and you are able to purchase it to I still believe. I still have alot to learn on it though. check it out and let your other readers know about it. thanks
