Hide-a-key

I made my daughter a spare key to take with her to school (just in case I don't come home in time to meet her (knock on wood)
Wasn't sure where to put it.
Didn't want if falling out of her bag.
Didn't want it on a necklace cause she would forget to wear it...or better yet, let someone borrow it.
So, I figured out a way to hotglue it to her bag.
(I love my hot glue gun.)

Start with some ribbon (I made mine about 8 inches long cause I folded over were the velcro was)
hot glue the velcro on the sides.
(to prevent my ribbons from fraying I take a match and slightly burn the ends.)

Then I thought she would need an indentification tag in case she did manage to lose it.
Cut those out of cardboard. (I made them about 4 inches....I wanted it pretty big so she couldn't stick it in her pocket and lose it)
Decided to use spray adhesive to adhere the fabric on my tags...and quickly regretted it. Sticky. I would probably use my glue gun if I was to do it again.
For the hole in the tag I cut an x and just glued each flap back.
I hot glued the top and bottom of the tag all the way around leaving an opening at the top so I could slide in the information.

Punch a hole.

Slide in info....add to key ring.

Hot glued one side of the ribbon velco side up to the inside of book bag. ( I put it in the front pocket)

Then you can put your key and tag on the ribbon and bend up to secure the velcro. It should stay put--but easy enough to get the key off to open the door. (you could easily sew the ribbon onto the bookbag--)

  1. I LOVE your ideas...and they seem so easy to do!!! I think that you need to take the Barbie doll house a little bit further and make your son a MAN CAVE for all of his fun toys...i'd like to see how you would do that!! You are quite the creative gal Kim...I wish I was more like you!!!!

  2. Cute idea--I did something like that for my kids for their backpacks in Ucon and then they "lost" the key. After a few days of searching--found it still in the lock of the door. :( (Come on in any stranger--we even made it easy for you! And here is a key for later!) :) Gotta love it!
